Fun Monday -- I Created Our Own Holiday Tradition
Another of these awesome memes, through which I can talk endlessly about myself and then link to others' blogs, read their posts and say to myself: "Why didn't I think of that?" This one's easy, from Deborah at The Humble Housewife, who wants to know about special holiday traditions. Here's mine:
The year my son was born I bought a menorah for his first Chanukah. Not that he cared; if I'd even dreamed of letting him touch it, he would've just gummed it anyway.
The following year I ordered another, and the next year I got menorahs for Robey and his new baby sister, Cleo. Eventually they both caught on and insisted they make their own selections. Since then, we go online every autumn and they each order a new menorah or dreidel to add to their collections. Here are some of our favorites:

Now that is a great holiday tradition!

What a sweet tradition! And yes, I remember the story behind each of my ornaments just as I bet you remember the stories behind each menorah. :)

I think that's a really cool tradition, some of those Menorah's are too cute!

Glad you joined the FM gang, your comment to my post was one of my favorites of the day ("ocular whiplash"? LOVED IT!).
I had no idea you could get "kid friendly" menorahs; I had to look closely at your photo because they looked like toys. Do you put candles in them and let the children light them each night?
That might satisfy any pyro tendencies in them ;) (or ignite them!).

The menorahs only LOOK kid friendly. In reality, Chanukah candles are so flimsy that they drip all over the place, so using them in one of these would ruin it. We use our plain old brass menorah for real but we do set out the entire collection every year so we can admire it. We have so many because they're so cute; obviously someone figured out about 20 years ago that menorahs could sell as well as Xmas ornaments if there were enough variety. Same with the dreidels -- you'd be really sorry if you tried to play dreidel with Waterford, but it makes a nice knick knack.

I think the menorah of little chairs is my favorite, and I'll bet the glass really sparkles when the candles are lit. I'd be afraid to spin some of the dreidels - they are too pretty!

I didn't know that menorahs came in different shapes. I've only seen the ones on TV where the candle holders are in that half moon shape. Great tradition!!

Isn't it funny that movies and TV shows always make things like that seem so generic? Have you ever seen a rainy funeral scene in a movie where anyone carried an umbrella that was anything other than black?
