Here is the last installment of my three week series of book reviews.  This week's book is How To Survive The Real World and man, I need to read this book cover to cover and sleep with it under my pillow and shred copies of it into my salads because I'm 40-mumble and still not sure how to survive in the real world.

How To Survive The Real World is published by Hundreds of Heads, the folks who also publish How To Survive Your Freshman Year (reviewed here), How To Get A's In College (reviewed here), and even a book called How To Survive Your In-Laws; I suppose a key hint there is that if you do away with your in-laws you've survived them.  Somehow, though, I think that's beside the point.

In any case, I found some of the advice in How To Survive The Real World particularly poignant, since it has to do with striking out on your own for what might be the first time.  There's lots of advice on how to build and maintain new relationships with your family and parents on an adult level, along with some advice that is simultaneously useful and silly (see below: Snickers Bar).  Again, all the information in How To Survive The Real World comes from young people who have made the transition from the make-believe adulthood of college to the like-it-or-not reality of first job, first home, first car and all that comes with them.

Remember Artypants, my favorite soon-to-be-college-freshman niece?  She's preparing to attend the Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn (school motto: "Isn't It Enough That We're In New York STATE?") and she will definitely need a copy of the book I recently received from the wonderful people at Hundreds of Heads publishing: How To Survive Your Freshman Year, By Hundreds Of College Students Who Did.  It's packed with advice from students across the educational and socioeconomic spectrum: kids attending all sorts of colleges and universities, male and female students from a variety of nationalities and lifestyles.  I'll buy Artypants a copy because I'm giving away mine to one of my readers.

So I run this Fame Contest at the start of every new season and the winner gets to have a favorite photo pictured on a favorite item from FeeFiFoto and displayed on our home page until the next contest's winner is announced. This season's winner, Chatbug Karen sent me one of the funniest photos I've seen in a long time, along with its companion shot and an explanation:

"[T]hat picture was taken about 30 years ago. Hubby and I had traveled to Canada to go fishing with his Boss and Boss's wife. I like to fish and was very proud to have caught this nice Northern Pike fish. (We actually caught a huge Muskie that still holds the record at the camp we stayed at on the Georgian Bay.) Anyway, I was holding the fish when it started to slip out of my hands. I should send you the picture before this one so you can show the progression of my expression."

Karen opted to have her photo displayed on a totebag so we put her photos on our Mia Cameron microfiber totes, although a canvas tote might be more handy for carrying fish.
