Using Twitter and other social media to drive traffic to your blog
Julie Pippert uses her words entertainingly to lament the fact that she has very little idea how to use social media and why she should try it anyway:
"I went to the Got Social Media? conference yesterday. Some of the best and brightest were there, and some of the even better and brighter presented. It was an interesting conference, full of good-to-know information, new concepts, attention-capturing speakers, and excellent networking.
So why, after it is over, do I still say I haven't Got Social Media? ...
Each earnest and dedicated social media person tried to explain to me---in the two minutes or less that you can get one-on-one in a crowded room of very social people---how they used social media. The problem is that their explanations were all predicated on the assumption that I knew what social media was. I have a vague idea...
However, beyond, say, Twitter, I'm unaware of the tools, how they work, how to use them, and most importantly, why to use them. I have ethical questions and fear factors, and am obstinate against too much technology that gets in the way of human to human direct interaction...
Building a social media network sounds suspiciously extremely time-consuming, as does maintaining it. It sounds great, but I still don't get it or how I will be able to incorporate it into my business."
I'm with you, Julie. When people start speaking of esoteric technicalities my eyes glaze over and roll back in my head, and I get dizzy and fall off my chair in the middle of Starbucks, bash my skull on the floor, and attract all kinds of unwanted attention. For future reference, I have a similar reaction to any discussion of math or insurance.
Having said that, I can say that I joined Twitter last week and after having tweeted about a dozen times since then, I can also say that however much twittering I actually do in the future will be intended to generate traffic to my blog and to FeeFiFoto.
I have a difficult time blogging exclusively about FeeFiFoto, for a variety of reasons. One is that, as much as I enjoy operating the site, there's only so much I can say about personalized photo gifts without feeling repetitive, redundant, like I'm repeating myself. I recently boasted posted about the Valentine cards we made on the site for Cleopatra to give to her class, and that's perfectly fine with me because it's relevant and topical and of the moment. When Mother's Day rolls around I'll have things to say about Mother's Day gifts; the same with Father's Day, graduations, the wedding season, etc. But, posting daily about personalized photo mugs or handbags, I'd run out of things to say and have to talk about the weather ("In Hartford, Hereford and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen. The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.") Interesting? Not so much.
I get bored talking about the same thing every day. My ADD's huge appetite demands copious helpings of humor, news, philosophy, gossip and food preparation instructions. Besides, there must be some greater purpose to my klutziness than just a gold medal for producing the most colorful bruises or inappropriate comments. These stories have to be told, so I tell them on days when I have nothing to say about business.
Therefore, the identity of this blog has to do with more than personalized photo gifts, and anyone tuning in on any given day has as much chance of encountering my latest slip and fall story as they do information about photo calendars.
Here's where Twitter comes in. Even though I may not be posting about my business every day, I am working on the business every day in one aspect or another. If I don't have the time, material or inclination to post about FeeFiFoto tomorrow, I can still tweet a few times to mention a graphic or marketing piece or customer service issue I'm currently working on. This is much less strenuous than composing and editing daily blog posts about the site, because I labor over ever word, every comma, every apostrophe. I even revisit posts that have been up for weeks and make minor tweaks and corrections. With Twitter, I can mention some aspect of the business, and gain a little tweak of exposure.
Do you Twitter? If so, why? If not, why not? Do you want to be my Twitter friend? Explain. Show your work.
Visit FeeFiFoto for personalized photo gifts, so you can see my motivation for all this blogging.
