Cupcake's class spent a month preparing for their Market Day. They learned about businesses and economics, business plans and partnerships. Each team was given a loan of up to $60, with which to purchase advertising and lease retail space in the third grade rooms. They planned, manufactured, and priced their merchandise; everything had to be made from recycled materials. There were bookmarks, banners, autograph books, jewelry, even miniature paper kites.
Last Wednesday the market was open. Cupcake and her partner manufactured and sold out of cardboard flag keychains; just before closing time she managed to sell the strips of denim on which the merchandise had been pinned for display.
This sign caught my eye, posted on the booth across from Cupcake's:
Well, I say bravo for them! Every store has to have rules, and this one makes way more sense than restricting bathroom use to employees.

These are three views of our library, which started out as Robespierre's nursery, and then Cleo's. The paintings were done just before Robey was born, by the guy who taught me to watercolor. When we had the shelves put in I couldn't stand to sacrifice the paintings, so we worked around them. The blue fish in the center of the last photo had to be moved to make way for the shelf, so I painted the one you see here.
Dr. Seuss's writing has been important to our family for decades; sometimes I still read his books to my kids.

Photo from OMG at Yahoo
This is Angelina Jolie. She's pretty. But there's something wrong with this photo of her. Can you find it?
Give up? I'll tell you what's wrong.
It's not that Angelina Jolie doesn't look breathtaking in this dress. She does.
It's not that the adoptive mother of three and the biological mother of three more has no business looking so fabulous. Well, actually she doesn't, but that's not the point.
The problem with this picture is that the hand she's holding belongs (presumably) to Brad Pitt, the owner of another of the most magnificent faces in the universe, and he's been EDITED OUT.
That's what's wrong with this picture.
Where do I file my complaint?

Can you tell what it is? The picture's not too clear. Try this one:
Is that better? Can you make out the representation of a football made from Cherry Coke and Mr. Pibb 12 packs, incorporated into a Coca-Cola fortress?
If I'd wanted a 12 pack of soda I definitely would have pulled over a chair so I could grab one from the very top instead of the convenient pile in front, because I'm obtuse like that.
My goodness, I find the most interesting things at the grocery store.

I'm disproportionately proud of myself. See it up in the address bar? It'll follow you just about anywhere you roam on my blog. Here it is:
Isn't it just as cute as a button? Well, actually it is a button. And it only took me somewhere between ten minutes and four hours to implement, with intermittent breaks for sending whiny notes to TypePad and attending Robespierre's wrestling match.
Now if I could just get that drop down menu to work...
